Instagram Now Lets Anyone Tag You [Or Brands] In Photos, Adds Them To “Photos Of You” Profile Section

UK.Gov passes Instagram Act: all your pics are belong to everyone now

This may very well be a case of the Government is trying to free up businesses and enterprise by reducing legislation – but we also don’t want to underestimate the Internet’s ability to freak out… something to watch as it progresses to Parliament and the House of Lords.

Chat apps have overtaken SMS by message volume, but how big a disaster is that for carriers?

Another trend that has snuck by many watching the social and digital space.

Retwact: A Tool for Fixing twitter’s Misinformation Problem

“Retwact tries to contain the damage (and)shame that comes along with spreading information that later turns out to be untrue…”

Nielsen: Facebook Declining In U.S. And On Desktop

So — grain of sale time.

The switch to mobile makes sense. The 10 million “lost” from Facebook user numbers… is an awkward statement. Consider that there’s an average of 3 million people who die each year, another 3 million who emigrate from the US (who could still be on Facebook, just not using it IN the US), not to mention Facebook cracking down on users who are underage, fake and spam accounts — and are we talking about a certain amount of activity here? It’s hard to tell since Nielsen can’t confirm these “lost” people actually went anywhere — if they defected to other networks or… um… just died.

Point being — take any decline under 20 million with a grain of slat when we’re talking about a user base of over a billion…

Broadchurch: ITV building engagement and brand loyalty using social media

by Feedback

Brand owners and service suppliers: sit up and take notice. ITV has just charted new territory by putting on a master class in how to use social media to build engagement in its programming and in doing so they go a long way to trashing sceptics’ arguments, which are fixated on the ROI debate.

ITV is the United Kingdom’s oldest independent TV station (est. 1955); in addition to buying and broadcasting shows, it also commissions its own material. In recent years ITV has been applauded for producing the highly acclaimed Downton Abbey and Britain’s Got Talent.

Eight weeks ago we were introduced to Broadchurch, a modern ‘whodunit’ drama based in a Dorset coastal village. The drama traces the hunt for the killer of schoolboy Danny Latimer, led by two detectives. Monday night TV will not be the same again. ITV drew in 9.2m+ viewers last night (33.5% of all viewers) – figures not seen since the nation was left asking ‘Who shot JR?’ It has been suggested that just 29 people knew how it would end and that cast members, crew and production teams had been kept in the dark. Its appeal has generated an estimated £15m in additional advertising revenue and has guaranteed the show international success. The seaside resort where it was filmed has been inundated with visitors flocking to enjoy its charm.

Feedback professionals are fans of the show and we applaud the broadcasters flawless use of social media to build engagement. ITV used social media to involve viewers in the story. The content released was carefully crafted to help build the story, and the timing of announcements helped contribute to the tension.

  • Super fan Becca Overton set up the unofficial fan page to run quizzes, competitions, chats and polls – which the programme’s makers Kudos Productions were very supportive of

  • Final episode credits contained an invitation to see an exclusive additional scene on Facebook / YouTube clocking up an instant 255,000 views immediately afterwards

  • #broadchurch spent the day trending on twitter with the cast making contributions and announcing the commissioning of a second series

There are many lessons in this case study. The biggest though has to be that ITV understood the fit between the ‘whodunit’ format and social media. People were able to expand on theories, share filming locations and even place bets. The proximity of viewers to the show and its stars was closer than anything we have ever experienced insuring everyone’s investment had a payback.

If you didn’t see it, you had best check it out on ITV on demand or wait for it to come to your screens wherever you are and have your tablets/smartphones to hand so you too can participate.

Could Pinterest Knock Facebook Off Its Perch?

by Feedback

Lately, Pinterest seems to put the “P” in popular. The social network is on fire, and if you’ve seen the latest stats on the virtual pinboard you should know why. Natalie Brandweiner of MyCustomer.com shared that “According to Compete, the number of Pinterest’s unique visitors increased by 429% from September to December 2011 to reach 7.21m users and research by Shareaholic indicated the site has overtaken Google+, YouTube and LinkedIn for site referrals, generating 3.6% of referred traffic from January.”

Even as recently as this weekend Techcrunch reported that Pinterest has over 10.4 million registered users, 9 million monthly Facebook-connected users, and 2 million daily Facebook users. (It is important to keep in mind that some of these stats are still speculation or determined through number of Likes on Facebook so are not true active user stats, yet.)

Okay, so we know that Pinterest is popular. But the question is, just how groundbreaking will it be? Dean Browell, PhD and EVP at Feedback, tackles that question in the UK’s MyCustomer.com:

Brandweiner writes, “With Pinterest’s more personalised approach for brands – particularly retailers – and growing popularity, how does the network fare against Facebook and could we have finally found a social platform to knock it off its perch?

Dean Browell from Feedback doesn’t think so. “There’s no way Pinterest will kill Facebook – it just isn’t the same network so can’t replace it,” he concludes. “But it can influence it. I think Pinterest will become and stay popular, in the vein of Tumblr with the possibilities of Twitter.”

So there you have it. It doesn’t look like the interest with Pinterest is going to wane anytime soon. My interest, however, is now more focused on how its success is going to influence the leading social networks.

Anna’s Social Media Picks of the Week – London, England Edition (09/17/10)

by Feedback

Do you have time to search the web everyday to find the newest social media tools? If the answer is no, then you have come to the right place. I have searched the World Wide Web for social media information all week, and stumbled upon a few favorites along the way. Here are my picks of the week:

The New Twitter:

This week, Twitter began rolling out a redesign. The “new” Twitter moves the search box up, has more relevant and customized search results, and has added filtering options. Filtering options include showing only tweets with links near your current location.

Social Media Stats:

A stat from last Saturday that is worth mentioning: The Pew Research Center did a recent study which indicated that people over age 50 now account for 42% of social networking users. Specifically,

“Some 47% of internet users ages 50-64 and 26% of users are 65 and older now use social networking sites . People aged over 50 now account for 42% of all social networking users, up from 22% a year ago.”

University Foursquare:

This week, Foursquare made it easier for universities to join their geo-location check-in service. Debuting Foursquare for Universities, colleges now have a page where they can apply to open their own branded profiles on Foursquare. Learn more about how universities are using Foursquare here.

Celebrity Twitter Auction:

If you want a celebrity or musician like Shaq (@therealshaq) or Eva Longoria (@evalongoria) to follow you on Twitter, you may be in luck. Twitchange is hosting the first ever celebrity Twitter auction (now through September 25th), where you can donate to ahomeinhaiti.org for a chance to have a celebrity follow, mention, or retweet you. Have Bieber fever? As Mashable expained, you’re not the only one:

The Justin Bieber Mega Package, described thusly, “Justin Bieber will follow you on Twitter for a minimum of 90 days, will retweet one of your tweets and will send out a tweet including your @twitterhandle,” is already up to $2,325.00 and 62 bids.

Facebook Places, UK:

Facebook places is now live in the UK… and just in time for our arrival. @Feedbackagency crew @alucas9 and @ideaman are working internationally for the next week, starting in London, England and ending in Paris, France. You can keep up with our travels by following us on Twitter; and if you’re in the UK, check-in on Places!
